The popularity of recreational running has increased over the years and many people are taking part in short- or long-distance runs.
When running, you are teaching your body different patterns of movement. These patterns can result in injury as your body works to compensate for movements that are adding stress to your skeletal frame and muscle tissue. Running injuries can be the result of multiple causes; from muscle imbalances and body misalignment to improper footwear which can alter your form when running. Training mistakes can also cause repetitive strain on your body. Most running injuries can be prevented or healed by improving muscle strength and range of motion which will positively impact the way you run.
Running injuries are common but they don’t have to be. Whether you are new to running or are a seasoned participant in the activity, you could benefit from our Collaborative Care Runner’s package. Along with a discount on a three-month fitness membership at our facility, this package includes a running assessment, personal training sessions, and appointments with one of our physiotherapists.
Bio-Mechanical Running Assessment: Two 45-minute sessions
The running assessment has two components. A functional movement assessment will analyze your muscle strength, flexibility, and joint range of motion to identify any weakness, muscle imbalance, or mobility deficit. The assessment continues with the treadmill (or outside if weather is suitable) to allow the trainer to identify vulnerabilities in your form. During the follow-up appointment, the trainer will share their findings and provide a plan that details recommendations for improvements to help reduce the risk of injury and increase efficiency.
Individual Personal Training: Three 60-minute sessions
Once the running assessment is completed, a certified personal trainer will design a customized program to strengthen your muscles, improve your performance, and help correct any gate or mobility problems you may be experiencing. If you are new to running, the trainer can also assist with proper footwear.
Physiotherapy: One initial assessment and one follow-up treatment
A physiotherapist will assess your range of motion, muscle strength, and overall flexibility. These factors play a key role in sports performance and injury prevention. Weak quad muscles, for example, put you at risk of runner’s knee and other common running injuries.
