What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine (also known as naturopathy) is a distinct branch of primary health care that focuses on treating the root cause of illness and disease by stimulating the healing power of the body. It blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine, while minimizing the use of surgery and drugs.
Treating both acute and chronic conditions, Naturopathic therapies are chosen based on the individual patient and their extensive case history while taking into account physiological, psychological, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Virtually everybody can benefit from Naturopathic medicine because the treatments are highly individualized. Some of the most common conditions seen by Naturopathic doctors are:
- Allergies – environmental, food, seasonal
- Acute illness - candida (yeast/fungal infection), cold/flu, sinusitis
- Chronic illness - cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, fibromyalgia, psoriasis
- Digestive issues – crohn’s/colitis, food sensitivity, indigestion, IBS
- Endocrine problems – diabetes, thyroid dysfunction
- Female issues – cycle irregularities, menstrual cramping, menopausal symptoms, PMS
- Fertility & pregnancy concerns
- High blood pressure & cholesterol
- Male issues – prostate enlargement, erectile dysfunction, prostatis
- Mental concerns – ADHD, anxiety, depression, mental fog, stress
- Pain – arthritis, headache, low back, migraine
- Weight loss, detox & immune boosting
- Wellness check-ups & illness prevention
Naturopathic doctors (ND’s) undergo rigorous medical training very similar to that of conventional general practitioners (i.e. your family doctor). The primary differences between Naturopathic and conventional doctors are the philosophical approach to treatment and the therapies used by each. Naturopaths commonly utilize the following modalities:
- Diagnostics, examination, and lab testing
-
Botanical medicine (herbalism)
-
Clinical nutrition
-
Homeopathic medicine (homeopathy)
-
Physical medicine (hydrotherapy, massage, etc)
-
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and acupuncture
-
Lifestyle counseling and prevention
Naturopathic doctors often work in partnership with other regulated health care providers to ensure that patients receive the most comprehensive and effective care possible. Most extended health insurance plans in Canada cover all or partial cost of Naturopathic treatments, however, Naturopathic medicine is not currently covered by OHIP.
Jennifer Johrendt BHSc, ND
Jennifer completed her pre-medical studies at the University of Western Ontario where she earned an honors
bachelor degree in Health Science (BHSc). From there, she moved to Toronto to attend the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, which is one of only two accredited Naturopathic medical schools in Canada. At this institution, Jennifer received further training in basic, medical, and clinical science; diagnostics; and Naturopathic principles and therapeutics. A one year internship at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic provided her with extensive clinical experience and the desire to start her own Naturopathic practice. After graduating as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) she moved to Carleton Place and is now accepting patients at Healthy Impact Naturopathic, located within Heritage Fitness.
